Smoky Glacier National Park

As we left Spokane May 20th, there was a haze in the air. We were surprised that Spokane & Coeur d’Alene might have smog, but there were no wildfires around so 🤷‍♀️.

We drove up through the beautiful panhandle of Idaho, and into Montana on Highway 2 still saw a haze. We found out later that the smoke was from the horrible fires up in Alberta, Canada.

We checked into a nice Vacasa (Airbnb type) in White Fish, Mt. The place had a big deck with a wonderful lake view, and was almost empty due to the early summer season. We spent Joslyn’s birthday in the cute downtown of Whitefish and enjoyed the long hours of sunlight. We took advantage of the quiet place, catching up with paper work and reading.

Even though there was thick smoke in the air, and the main road to the park was still partially closed, we headed up to Glacier National park. We were able to walk up the main road, which ran along a beautiful stream with magnificent, towering, snow capped peaks. We passed maybe only 100 people biking and walking on what will soon be a very crowded and heavily trafficked road. We did not see many animals, probably due to the smoke.

The smoke contined to thicken over the next day, so we skipped visiting the park a second day, and headed south in search of breathable air. We stayed one night in Missoula, before heading to the parks in Wyoming.
